Guide: How to Wash and Shine Your Car Without Scratches
The ProDiagAuto method, free with your order. This guide shows you, step by step, how to wash and shine your car like a professional, without leaving micro-scratches.
Allow about 1 h 30 for a full wash with polishing, and 30 minutes for a simple wash. Follow the steps that match your equipment:
- Cordless pressure washer + foam cannon: steps 1 and 2
- 13-piece detailing brush kit: step 3
- 12V cordless polisher: step 5
- 4-in-1 cordless vacuum: step 6
Before you start
Always wash in the shade, on cool bodywork. In the sun, water and shampoo dry too quickly and leave marks.
Prepare:
- 2 buckets of water: one with car shampoo, one with clean water to rinse the mitt
- A car shampoo (from a supermarket or car centre), never washing-up liquid
- A microfibre wash mitt (included in the detailing brush kit)
- 2 or 3 clean microfibre towels for drying
- Your devices' batteries fully charged the day before
Step 1: the foam pre-wash
The foam lifts dirt before you touch the bodywork. It's the secret to avoiding scratches.
- Drop the cordless washer's hose into a bucket of clean water, filter at the bottom.
- Fill the foam cannon with water and a little car shampoo, then attach it to the gun.
- Cover the whole car with foam, from bottom to top.
- Leave it for 3 to 5 minutes, without letting it dry.
- Remove the cannon and rinse from top to bottom with the 40° nozzle (wide jet).
Tip: only use the 0° nozzle (concentrated jet) for wheels and wheel arches, and keep at least 30 cm between the nozzle and the paint.
Step 2: the two-bucket wash
The mitt should never go back onto the paint carrying grains of sand. The two buckets solve this problem.
- Dip the microfibre mitt in the shampoo bucket.
- Wash one panel at a time (roof, bonnet, a door…), in straight lines, not circles.
- Rinse the mitt in the clean water bucket by rubbing it, then reload with shampoo.
- Start at the top (roof, windows) and finish at the bottom (sills), the dirtiest part.
- Rinse the whole car with the washer, from top to bottom.
Step 3: wheels and details
Wheels are the dirtiest part of the car: use separate brushes, never your bodywork mitt.
- Soft-bristle brushes: badges, grille, seals, headlight surrounds, then air vents and buttons inside.
- Wheel brush: between the spokes and behind the wheel, with a wheel cleaner if needed.
- Wire brushes: only on unpainted metal (unpainted calipers, exhaust, engine). Never on paint or lacquered wheels.
Rinse the wheels well with the washer, then rinse your brushes in clean water after use.
Step 4: drying
A car left to dry on its own keeps limescale marks. Dry it straight after rinsing.
- Lay a large microfibre towel flat on the panel.
- Gently pull it towards you, without rubbing or pressing.
- Change towels as soon as one is soaked.
- Open the doors and boot to dry the seals and edges.
Step 5: shine with the polisher
Polishing removes light marks and gives a mirror finish. Always work on a clean, completely dry car.
| Pad | Use | Recommended speed |
|---|---|---|
| Flat sponge | Polishing: removing light marks | 3 to 5 |
| Wave sponge | Spreading wax or finishing polish | 2 to 4 |
| Wool | Buffing: the final glossy finish | 4 to 6 |
| Sandpaper | Wood, metal, rust. Never on paint | 5 to 8 |
- Attach the pad to the hook-and-loop backing plate, well centred.
- Put 3 or 4 small drops of polish or wax on the pad.
- Place the polisher flat on the bodywork before switching it on, at low speed.
- Work on a 50 × 50 cm area, in slow overlapping passes, without pressing hard.
- Wipe off the excess with a clean microfibre, then move to the next area.
Tip: never stay still in one spot, and avoid sharp edges on the bodywork.
Step 6: the interior
Finish with the cabin, doors open for fresh air.
- Take out the mats and shake them.
- Blow the dust out of the air vents and off the dashboard with the vacuum's blower function, or dust them with the soft brushes.
- Vacuum from top to bottom: seats, then floor, then mats.
- Use the narrow nozzle for seams, under the seats and storage pockets.
- Empty the container and tap the filter after each use.
The vacuum handles small amounts of liquid (a spilled drink), but it is not a wet vacuum.
Mistakes to avoid
- Washing in full sun or on hot bodywork.
- Using washing-up liquid: it damages the paint's protection.
- Rubbing in circles with the mitt: use straight lines.
- Using the same mitt for wheels and bodywork.
- Picking up a mitt that fell on the ground without rinsing it thoroughly.
- Polishing a car that is still dirty or wet.
Recommended routine: a wash every 2 weeks, interior vacuuming every 2 to 4 weeks, and polishing 2 to 3 times a year.
